Week 5: Digital Citizen

Week 5--Why is it important to be a good digital citizen? What value does a good digital reputation have?

Why is it important to be a good digital citizen?
A good digital citizen is considerate and respectful of the internet and others using it. It is important to be a good digital citizen to show respect and be courteous to others. A good digital citizen does not condone or participate in cyberbullying, cyberstalking, or other inappropriate behavior on the internet.

What value does a good digital reputation have?
Just like in the real world, your reputation online follows you everywhere. Anything you say, do, or post on the internet will always be linked back to you no matter how anonymous it may seem. Schools and Future employers constantly monitor social media and other internet communication. A good digital reputation is imperative to acquiring future jobs, and maintaining those jobs.

  1. You've mentioned that schools and employers monitor social media sites and other communications. I've also heard of many parents that monitor these sites. There was a teacher who was fired because she posted pictures of her students on her Facebook page. Next to the pictures of her students were pictures of her partying at a club the week before. A parent saw them and complained. Why did that teacher think that was a good idea? I have no idea, but it sends a message to the rest of us.

  2. I am in total agreement of what you are saying about having a good digital reputation. So many people do not think about what they post on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. I believe that this is important for teachers and future teachers to understand. Great post.

  3. I agree that having a good reputation is a must in all professions. As educators, we are always scrutinized about the things we do in and out of the classroom. Some people do not seem to think that what they do on the internet follows them around. I have worked too hard for my degree to have it taken away because of something on the internet.

  4. It is very important that we all monitor what is posted. I just wonder why a teacher would use her the same Facebook page that she uses for personal post to post pictures of students. We all know that teachers are held to a very high standard. I personally do not accept friend requests from current students on the account that I use Facebook primarily for personal contacts and because I have some friends who post things that I may not think appropriate for young teenagers and I don't want family discussed the next day in class.
