Week 2: Real Life > Virtual Life

As a math person, the title of this blog just seemed appropriate. In a technological age, we have seen the positive effects of technology and social networking. I can connect with anyone around the world through Facebook, twitter, and other social websites. The possibilities are endless and this no doubt helps professionals in the education field. We can connect with students from anywhere. Virtual field trips and connecting with experts are amazing educational tools.

So when does technology become a bad thing? As a technology person, it pains me to make this next statement but I feel that it is necessary. I worry that too much technology allows students and adults alike to disconnect from reality. Many people live in virtual worlds every day and fail to see the real world. Some begin to believe that they are actually their fake persona.  What are your thoughts? How do we strike a balance between virtual and real life?

  1. Courtney,
I agree with you when you say that too much technology can cause students and adults to disconnect from reality. I love technology, and it is becoming a normal thing for me and my students everyday, but there has to be limits. I've heard stories about people who never leave the house after coming home from school because they get online and play virtual reality games with people from all over the world. If we as a society are not careful, we will produce a society of students who might find it hard to function in society. I always try to encourage my students to get away from their cell phones and enjoy life, taking a break from technology.

    Great Post!

  2. Courtney I agree the virtual world can ruin a lot of people lives and day to day activities. Today many people email and text instead of having a face to face conversation, I think many people can have a virtual conversation about things they ordinarily would not talk about or say. The new MTV show Catfish shows us just how crazy the virtual world can be. Some people do not like to face reality so therefore they create a person online to be who they themselves wish they could be. Technology is great but it can also be dangerous.

  3. Technology can be a great thing or a bad thing depending on how technology is used. In the world we are in now there are a high percentage of people Texting, on Facebook, and Twitter. You have people in this world that cannot lay their phone down or function if that cannot connect to the virtual world. Ms. Black was talking about the new show Catfish. There should be no reason for anyone to be in the situation where they do not know who they are talking to on the other end of the connection. I agree many people live in virtual worlds every day and fail to see the real world.

  4. At times, I have an old fashion sense of things. I am a history teacher, and I utilize technology in my classroom. Technology enables me help my students connect with history and understand history in a modern light. I am old fashion in as sense because I create my lessons through my textbook. My students are assigned textbooks with reading assignments three nights a week. I am all for modern technology, but my students excel with and without it.
